Did you celebrate International Archives Day on June 9?
We’re proud to serve the citizens of the United States as the National Archives. In our safekeeping are millions of Federal documents, from the Constitution to the 1940 Census to military service records. They can accessed by the public for free either online or in our research rooms across the country.
But the United States only created a national archives in 1934 by an Act of Congress. Until then, agencies took care of their own records with varying results. (The picture above shows records being fumigated before being accessioned into the National Archives in 1936.)
