Heavy construction equipment is driven inside the shell of the White House during renovations. This photo was taken on May 17, 1950.
During this time, the interior of the White House was supported only by temporary steel supports. The exterior walls rested on new concrete underpinnings, which allowed earth-moving equipment to dig a new basement.
You can see more of the incredible renovations to the White House during the Truman administration over on the Truman Presidential Library Facebook page on Wednesdays.
