Book lecture at the National Archives on Wednesday, February 29, at noon
Author Elizabeth Dowling Taylor discusses the life of Paul Jennings, who was born into slavery on the plantation of James and Dolley Madison and later became a part of the Madison household staff at the White House. After achieving emancipation, Jennings would write the first White House memoir, see his sons fight with the Union Army in the Civil War, and give money from his own pocket to an aged and impoverished Dolley Madison.
A book signing will follow the program.
